Bundle Up and Come Workout with Us for FREE

Getting motivated to exercise in the cold weather can be difficult – even for those who make activity a daily part of their lives. That’s why Cheryl Borecky, owner/operator of Go Active wants to make being active outside fun and easy, even in the winter months. To do that, she has started Project Go Active with the goal of removing some of the barriers that prevent people from following through on their good intentions to exercise. Project Go Active is a free 30-minute workout, run twice a month by Borecky. The workouts are out in the Trenton community, in locations such as Hanna Park or Mount Pelion. Participants can be any age, any fitness level, and there is no equipment needed. By running free classes, Borecky is removing the financial barrier that can keep people from joining fitness groups. And by running the classes at 7a.m. on Saturday mornings, she is attempting to remove the scheduling barriers that prevent people from finding time. “Often I’ll promote my other Go Active programs and people will say, ‘I love the idea but I can’t afford it, or it doesn’t fit into my schedule.’ With Project Go Active, anyone can join me for a free 30-minute workout and get it out of the way first thing in the morning. It’s rain or shine and kids are welcome to join their parents,” said Borecky. Go Active is an outdoor adventure company that runs Stand Up Paddleboarding lessons and tours in the summer, snowshoe adventures in the winter, and indoor and outdoor ParentFit classes year round. Borecky is aware of similar free workout projects across Canada and the U.S. that have seen great success. Some projects in larger urban areas have groups of volunteers who run daily free workouts with more than 200 people attending. She plans to expand Project Go Active by getting other fitness trainers in the area involved and having more frequent workouts, in various locations. Since moving to Trenton from Alberta four years ago, Borecky has found winter can be a challenging time for people in this area. “People stop being active as the winter comes and the days get shorter. I also feel my motivation start to wane this time of year. But to set my alarm and know that there are five or 50 people waiting for me, that’s motivating.” Just like Go Active’s ParentFit classes, Project Go Active focuses on functional fitness and the movements can be modified based on skill level or injuries. Classes may involve running, climbing the Mount Pelion stairs, doing squats, push-ups, or burpees, or even using the play structure at Hanna Park in unique ways to get a sweat going. “Project Go Active is a great initiative to encourage everyone to move their bodies,” said Leslie Beatty, a Project Go Active participant. “Whether you are a beginner who needs a push to get started, or an active person just looking for something new to try, it is an excellent workout!” “It’s all about providing people with that extra motivation to get outside,” said Borecky. “People are deterred by the cold, but as long as you dress warmly, there’s no reason you can’t get out there.” There is no registration required. Getting Fit with ParentFit

Cheryl Borecky, owner of Go Active, has a goal. It isn’t a personal fitness goal like running a marathon or riding her bike from Vancouver to San Francisco in seven days (although she’s done both). Her goal is to help parents and families be active. A parent herself, Cheryl knows all too well the challenges involved in finding time for exercise. With a husband, three-year-old son, high-energy dog and her own thriving business, Cheryl is one busy lady. But she makes it work. And she wants to help other parents in the Bay of Quinte region find ways to stay active with their families. Go Active is an outdoor adventure company that runs Stand Up Paddleboarding lessons and tours in the summer, snowshoe adventures in the winter, and indoor and outdoor ParentFit classes year round. All of Go Active’s programs are family-friendly, particularly the ParentFit classes, which are strength and conditioning classes just for parents. The indoor ParentFit classes are run out of CrossFit Trent at 99 Dufferin Avenue in Trenton. Here, parents of all ages and experiences can come with or without their children for a CrossFit-style workout that focuses on functional fitness and is adaptable based on participants’ abilities and/or injuries. Cheryl coaches pregnant moms, post-natal moms who come toting newborns, and parents of toddlers and older children. There is an area for children to play but the approach is free-range, with children often participating alongside their parents, imitating the movements. Look around the gym during any given class and you may see parents using their children as weights when doing squats, moms breastfeeding to calm crying babies, or Cheryl simultaneously coaching, bouncing babies, DJ-ing, and running the time clock, all while ensuring participants achieve an intense workout in the time they’ve carved out. “Many moms start the classes with feelings of guilt because they are taking time to do something for themselves,” said Cheryl. “It’s amazing to see their perceptions change with time as they realize they need to take time to ‘fill their cup’ and that it is essential to do things for themselves to be good parents and spouses.” ParentFit participant, Trish Lord, got out of the habit of being active when she went to college. Her high school days of volleyball, soccer and figure skating ended and the weight started tacking on. Year after year her weight increased until finally, at 426lbs, she made the decision to have gastric bypass surgery. After losing some initial weight from the surgery, Trish embarked on a fitness journey through Go Active’s ParentFit classes. When she started in May 2015, she was 350lbs. Today, 16 months later, she is 200lbs. “I credit Cheryl and her class,” said Trish. “She is so motivating. She keeps me on track.” Trish has seen huge improvements in her everyday mobility. She used to struggle with stairs and couldn’t get up off the floor without assistance. Now she’s doing sit-ups, burpees and lifting weights. She has no problem keeping up with her kids and husband, and they can participate in activities together. “My kids come to ParentFit with me and they love it,” said Trish. “They love to play on the rings and go on the rower. Getting on board with SUP

Written and summitted to the Trentonian Newspaper in August 2016  by Carly Baxter Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) is the world’s fastest growing watersport. Why? Because it’s fun! My first exposure to SUP was on vacation in Maui in 2013. I watched people from all walks of life gliding across the water. It looked like a good workout and it looked relatively easy, compared to say surfing or waterskiing.   Although my interests were piqued, I didn’t try Stand Up Paddleboarding in Maui. In fact, I didn’t get around to trying SUP until a couple of weeks ago. Having never been big into paddle sports, I wasn’t driven to find out how or where to try this intriguing new sport. “It looks fun, but it’s for other people,” I told myself.   Luckily for me, Cheryl Borecky, owner/operator of Go Active makes learning how to Stand Up Paddleboard easy for the citizens of Quinte West.   “Anyone can do it,” said Borecky. “I’ve had people as young as one and as old as 85 out on a paddleboard. No experience is necessary.”   Go Active is an outdoor adventure company that runs SUP lessons and tours in the summer, snowshoe adventures in the winter, and indoor and outdoor ParentFit classes year round.   So on a sunny, breezy Sunday afternoon, my husband and I participated in one of Go Active’s Learn to SUP classes. We drove to Little Lake in Brighton where we met up with Borecky and four other wannabe Stand Up Paddleboarders.   Borecky talked us through the SUP basics, including feet placement and paddle technique, before we carried our boards and equipment (all supplied by Go Active) out onto the water. We all started on our knees and, as we became more comfortable, tried getting up into the standing position. Borecky says it’s not overly common for learners to fall into the water, but our group must have been the exception. Almost everyone made a splash at some point during the lesson.   “Getting up was definitely the hardest part,” said Tom Shutt. “But I like being in the water, so instead of worrying a lot about trying to keep my balance, if I felt like I was going down, I just jumped in. That’s part of the fun.”   One’s physical fitness can sometimes determine how quickly they get the hang of Stand Up Paddleboarding, however Borecky says that’s not always the case.   “Some less fit people jump right on and say ‘this is easy,’ while I have a marathon runner who is still very shaky after a few times on the board. The brain needs to figure out how to switch on the required muscles and that sometimes just takes time.”   Whether Stand Up Paddleboarders start out physically fit or not, regular SUPing will develop core strength, arm strength from paddling, and strong legs from maintaining balance on the board. It is a total body workout.   Go Active also offers SUPFit classes for the more advanced Stand Up Paddleboarder looking for the extra challenge of a cardiovascular workout. Picture CrossFit on water. Pushing the envelope

Running a marathon is kind of like having a baby (and I can say that because I have had one ;)). Months ahead you anticipate and run through what the day will be like. You prep yourself physically and emotionally. You pack a bag. You have a solid support team. You try to sleep as the days approach (but you can’t). You’re nervous and excited all the same. And then race day gets here and everything gets thrown out the window. The first hour is a breeze. The energy cubes taste sweet and the water is refreshing. You think you got this in the bag. But by km 30 the last thing you want is a supporter cheering you on, someone passing you yet another gel, and all you really want is the drugs – the good stuff. And then before you know it, it’s all over. You stumble pass the finish line with your prize in hand, half conscious, beat up and exhausted beyond words. The days pass and everyone congratulates you….AND  asks when your going do your next one. And as the weeks pass, the memories of the pain and anguish drift off and you wonder if it was all that bad and if maybe, just maybe, you should in fact consider another. The fact is I won’t (neither more marathons or more children ;)). But what I won’t stop doing is pushing myself, pursuing lofty goals and trying new ways to get their. It had been a long time since I had set a bigger goal and worked hard at it. 4 plus years in fact or BC (before Chason). Time just got away on me. Which it has a way of doing for all of us. And one thing this marathon really taught me was that it doesn’t matter how busy you are in life, there is always enough hours in the day to do the things that truly matter to you. The Crappiest Most Enlightening Road Trip Yet

So we did it. Or I did it. I only half asses planned our first non-planned family road trip vacation. And the result: only a slight disaster. My god when did road trips change. Likely somewheres between the time the sperm connected with the ovaries and when I popped out our beautiful baby boy.  I love that little human. And I also love all sorts of travel. And coffee. And my mountain bike. And riding it. And did I mention coffee. These are the elements that were the basis of my years of travel in my 20’s and my adventures with my husband B.C. (what we refer to as before Chason).  I loved planning and not planning all sorts of adventures. From backcountry ski trips, to road trips to Moab, to overseas beach vacations and everything in between. Our days on the road would consist of trying out as many local coffee shops as possible in the new towns we visited, scooping out local gear shops, finding the best trails to run and ride, having mid-day naps, eating meals when we wanted to and pulling into new campgrounds at god forsaking hours if we so chose. And now you ask, what did this last road trip vacation feel like. Let’s re-cap. PC (post Chason) itinerary: Get up at 6:15am with your toddlers feet in your face and feeling groggy Drink cold coffee while multi-tasking Take two hours to pack up everyone and head to the local town Drink mildly warm local coffee while making sure your toddler doesn’t throw himself into traffic, stopping into toy shops, bike shops and artsy shops to make everyone in the group happy Try to locate the coolest playground in the town your visiting, while calculating how far the park is from the local trails and how long grandma and toddler will last before they are both cranky and need their next meal And go….race with husband (and likely get lost again) to the local trails and blast through them on your bike or on foot Pick up grandma and the kidlet and stop 3 times before everyone is in bathroom break sync, you have snacks to accommodate everyone, your toddler is in pee free clothes and the truck has gas Get lost a few more times and finally pull into a real campground that everyone likes by nightfall Repeat the above for the next 11 days with many added detours, bathroom breaks, trailer breaking fiasco’s and a few too many tears and cranky people But in all seriousness it took me 11 days to realize some key lessons in this long story. Regardless what my husband thinks: planning is key When you try to do everything, you end up doing nothing And though it seems like everything has changed in our road tripping lives… rather maybe it didn’t change entirely….but what it looks like just changed. And maybe that’s okay. So our days of rejuvenated sleeps, endless hot coffees, long bike rides, mid-day naps and late night campsite pull ins are gone. BUT if we change our mindset and do a bit of realistic pre-planning (take note husband), I am thinking we have created a pretty cool new road tripping outlook. 36 things it took me 36 years to realize

I know your stunned….its hard for me to believe it too. The big 3-6 and you didn’t think I was a day over 30! 😉 I have lived a pretty unconventional life, so I was a bit behind those in their twenties settling into careers, marriages and babies. While they were doing such, I was gallivanting around the world, travelling near and far, changing careers more then some change their underwear and certainly not even thinking about being a wife. No path is right or wrong, good or bad….just each their own; unique and glorious in its own sense. I feel grateful to already feel like I have experienced a lifetime of stories to share, to have cultivated worldwide friendships a many, and to have more scars on my body then some war vets. So as I embark on my 36th year I share with you some of the key lessons learned in my 35 travels around the sun and back: 1. Dessert before dinner makes sense. I often say “if a meteor were to hit in minutes would you rather die savoring dessert or eating dinner?” Case closed. 2. Less is more in more ways then you can imagine. Over the years I have come to find that the less stuff I have the more I love, use and truly appreciate what I have. 3. Travel, travel and more travel while you can. I have been lucky, over 30 plus countries to date. But I still wished I had travelled more while I was young and carefree and had little responsibilities. 4. Not enough time is a shitty excuse. Everyone has the same amount of hours in the day. I often wonder what the f I did with my time BC (before child). . You have the time if you make the time. 5. Work is overrated. Well not fully overrated since it does pay the bills, put food on the table and make SOME people happy. But I have to say for 35 years I put work second and me first….and well look at me now! 6. Real food is underrated. When I was a teenager I ate McDonalds – all the time. I mean seriously – all the time. And then I paid the price for eating food like products and forgetting about the power of real whole foods and what they did for my body. 7. Think HARD before you speak. I have a big mouth. Both physically and literally. And over the years I have paid for it. I have come great strides in learning to pause and breath or ponder before I reply. 8. Call your grandma more. I didn’t do this enough. Trust me do it now. 9. Don’t ever take a cup of hot coffee and a quiet morning for granted – EVER. If you are a parent you will fully understand this statement. If you are not: please enjoy your cup of java and ability to read the newspaper for all of us. 10. Be nice to your mother: you only get one (maybe two if we keep equality real here). They can drive us crazy, be opinionated, undiplomatic, and everything in-between. But what I have learnt is: it doesn’t matter. They need us. They need our support and they...

Why travel is good for the soul…

I have been lucky enough to travel a fair bit in my life. Once upon a time I actually dreamed of creating a profession in order to be paid to travel the world. Something like a travel photographer for national geographic, or a worldwide coffee shop tester (if that even exists). I was a vega-bond, a dreamer, and I had a true love for adventure. After years of constantly living out of Rubbermaid bins I finally craved more stability and chose a different career path. But my love for travel never died.   To this day, it doesn’t matter if it’s one day, two weeks, or a few months. It doesn’t matter if its to Asia, Mexico, or Ottawa. It doesn’t matter if its an all inclusive, a condo, the side of the road, a cabana, or a hostel (and yes I have slept on the side of many roads). Whatever forms, lengths or locations, I find travel of all types to have the same impact. Travelling is deep down, damn good for the soul. And here’s why:   Traveling away from the busyness and hustle and bustle of everyday life helps us be in the moment. There are no age limits on who can travel and experience new adventures. I was lucky enough to start road trippin’ at an early young and hope to god, this continues till my last days on earth. Traveling to new and unfamiliar locations usually means at some point in time you will be faced with unplanned situations. Relishing in these sometimes frustrating and stressful times help you learn to cope with the uncertainties of daily life. Breathing new air is uplifting and gives us time to reduce stress. Something everyone can benefit from. Travelling, especially abroad, connects us with new foods, new cultures, new climates, new foods, new lifestyles, did I mention new foods? This challenges perspectives, pallets, immune systems, and outlooks. Travel fosters reflectiveness, a mental skill often in short supply today. And lastly and most important to me, travel feeds dreams. Every time I venture out on a big road trip, or on a plane ride, my mind travels back to the days of dreaming of being that professional traveller. My smile gets bigger, my brain gets clearer, and my soul feels lighter. Why you shouldn’t be afraid of CrossFit (…or ‘Pilates’ or Kayaking or ____)

I’m not in good enough shape. I’m intimidated. I’m not hardcore. I can’t run. I’m too big. I’m too small. I’ll get too big. I can’t…I won’t! And the million other reasons why you convince yourself not to sign up to try ‘_______’ (fill in the blank here). Well I got some news for you: you’re not alone.  I hear it all too often.  Like EVERY WEEK. I hear it from the dental assistant, from local momma friends, from family members, from the bank teller, from kids to the elderly. No joke, I hear it. Everyone is afraid to try something. And that’s okay. But I am here today to tell you: you don’t need to be afraid. Specifically of CrossFit but like the title states, fill in the blank with any activity. Maybe you have been scared to try that hot yoga class or jump on a mountain bike or join the local running group. Whatever it is, the same usually holds true. And here’s why you need not be afraid of trying CrossFit or _______:   Because MOST people that do Crossfit aren’t athletes. They aren’t going to the open, or the games, or to the Olympics. They don’t belong to the cult, or follow the Paleo diet. THEY just like the atmosphere, the workouts, the community feel. They come in, workout, and they get out. Plain and simple.   Because we have all been there. I trained for years in a regular gym and was in decent shape when I decide to join a Crossfit gym. And I was STILL scared shitless about my first day of class. But guess what: I got over it. I sweated, I laughed, I was sore, I met cool people, and did I mention I was sore? And then I kept going.   Because you will be good at something. Not everything. But something. There are so many variations, so many workouts and combinations, so many trails, and so many hills. And one day you will find that move or that workout that just works well for your body and your mind. And BOOM you will feel awesome and proud. And so you should!   Because you will never get bored. Period. Plan and simple. Because there are too many new moves, new workouts, new weights, and new speeds.   Because it’s honestly about community. You know why I started and STAYED with CrossFit? Because I loved working out beside 17 year olds, 75 years olds, cancer survivors and millionaires (and yes I have Crossfitted beside each of those). I loved seeing overweight people and super doper athletes all pushing each other. I loved that it was about how YOU felt and how YOU did, but with the competitive flare of people pushing you to do better. I loved walking into the gym, seeing like minded people and talking about things like mountain bikes, up-coming travels, new baby milestones, the best coffee in town, where to find good raw honey and all that good shit that makes my life go around. THAT is truly WHY I kept CrossFitting. Ya sure the intensity, the diversity and the gains I made in my workouts helped. But in the end it’s about community. Gear….gear and more gear….Do we have a problem?

Last weekend I dragged the family to the Toronto Outdoor Show. Part business, part pleasure. There was a lot of eating (aka snacking on raw chocolate and vita mix smoothies) and a lot of gear drooling. This got me thinking…..can one person have too much gear? Honestly, we are a household of 2.5 and we own something ridiculous like 8 bicycles. We also have alpine touring gear, cross-country ski gear, skate ski gear, ice climbing gear, rock climbing gear, mountaineering gear, snowshoe gear, paddling gear, running gear, and crossfit gear. Like seriously people, our garage and gear closets are practically worth more then our entire household and driveway contents combine. And this doesn’t take into consideration my husbands work gear which includes scuba diving and parachute gear amongst other specialized gear. OMG sooooooo much gear. And trust me we don’t consider ourselves to be materialistic people. In fact I hate stuff….I would live in a 550 sg ft container if I could…..but we would need a 550sq ft gear garage to go with it. And so even though I hate stuff, and I have less time then ever before to dabble in all my sport loves….we continue to go to outdoor shows and drool over more gear. We drool over different mountain bikes, different sup boards, kite boarding set-ups, wetsuits, backpacks, etc etc etc. My husband even spent 30 mins drooling over a top of the line VitaMix – great so now we are into kitchen gear. Having lived in the Rocky Mountains prior to Ontario, I can tell you that our gear collection and continued ‘obsession’ (for lack of a better word) is not out of the ordinary. But in these parts of Ontario….when we list the above, people want to pass us a helpline card. So when does the love for many, many sports and activities become a problem? When does too much gear, become TOO MUCH gear? I don’t know….but I will tell you this….if that Vitamix came on a new bicycle then my husband would have had me sold in an...

Less than a week away…the dreaded V-day. I dislike Valentine’s Day – can you tell? Its soooooo commercial and forced and kind of depressing. And I always forget about it till the last minute. Then I dart to the store feeling pressured by society to get something sweet for the hubs. Usually its Reese hearts. Because who doesn’t like peanut butter with their chocolate. But the last few years, my husband and I have completely switched over from milk chocolate to dark chocolate.   It all started after we had our son. Every few nights we would sip red wine and eat a few squares (or ummm bars) of dark chocolate. As the exhaustion of being new parents settled in, we drank less, ate less and had less ‘dates’. But our love for dark chocolate continued.   So if you haven’t already, here’s 7 reasons why you should take the leap from milk to dark too:   It’s rich in flavonoids and antioxidants. This may mean nothing to you just yet. But to me it’s the biggest and bestest reason! Research is now linking consumption of antioxidants and their overall health benefits. From increase in memory, to lowered blood pressure, to decreased rates of heart disease and stroke. Pretty powerful stuff. Dark chocolate is being touted as a cholesterol-lowering super food. Bring on those healthy fats! It tastes amazing with wine (red in particular). And yes I just added in an excuse to have a glass of wine! It’s a mood booster! The fatty acids in the dark chocolate may have something to do with the neuro stimulation. Whatever the connection – bottom line is: it makes you feel good! Initial studies are being prepared to analyze dark chocolates affect on longevity. But dude, it might help you live longer…umm could there be a better reason to eat dark chocolate? High in vitamins and minerals? Yeppers. Potassium, Copper, Magnesium and Iron are included in your dose of sweetness! And lastly – its variety!
